E-sports gain popularity

E-sports, a new way to enjoy games…

1. The same old story!

E-sports gain popularity rapidly but lets remember a few things first, “You need to stop spending so much time in front of that screen, video games do not offer anything”, how many times have you heard that? Honestly take a minute and think all the people that know your hobby will tell you that, at least once in your life. I bet you already know how many times, each one of them has said it. Pretty sure the thought that always came first in your head was “not you too!”.

Later on you hear in the news that a professional sports player has signed up a multi-million dollar contract and your parents will start mumbling the usual, about you playing video games all day long. Don’t get me wrong, things now are different but that is just an example of how things were 15-20 years ago. There is even a good chance that those who heard that from their parents do the same thing to their kids today but again children today have access to electronic devices at a much younger age!

Like I said all that was 15-20 years ago where PC’s were not accessible to everyone, most of the games were single player and the internet speeds could not support Online Games the same way they do now or 10 years ago. With the rise of the internet and the popularity it has gained in the recent years a lot of people make their living from playing online games and by making their living I mean over $2000 per month or even more.

2. Numbers of the charts

A little bit over $36.000.000 in rewards and over 100.000.000 viewers are some of the most mind boggling numbers and some of the reasons why E-sports gain popularity by the minute. Although these numbers come from different games, they definitely show that people prefer to get involved with E-sports quite a bit. Nowadays people can place bets online in teams that compete in various tournaments of all genres, pretty much like placing a bet for the Spanish “El Classico” – Barcelona vs Real Madrid.

Most of these games are streamed live and with no subscription or fees as you would need for any regular sports game, they happen more often than the actual sports games and given the opportunity any player can participate. Well, by any player I mean that a gamer has more chances to compete in E-sports league compared to a National/Major League in any other sport. For sure in both cases, a lot of effort and dedication is required but in sports physique, physical athleticism or physical dexterity are the key for an athlete to succeed.

3. Preferences and a way to gain something

These are just a few of the reasons that people have started showing more interest on E-sports, any E-sports fan can literally open a browser from any device and go watch a game of their favorite genre right now while for a basketball or football game, you would have to wait at least 3-5 days before the next one. The general rule for sports is that fans support mostly a specific team or player, while this applies for E-sports as well, viewers will also watch other games because they learn as they watch, the content is much more appealing to them since they also play that very same game.

4. Incredible amounts in Prizes

Gaming tournaments have always been around and with good rewards but in 2012, Valve with the help of Nvidia organized the first Dota 2 tournament, “The International” with a total prize pool of $1.600.000 and that was the beginning. That very same tournament gained exponential publicity causing the annual prize pool numbers to reach heights that no one would ever imagine.

At the moment “The international 10” is on hold due to the Global Pandemic but it has amassed a prize pool of little over $34.000.000 with the winning team ( of 5) leaving with a cash prize that reaches $15.000.000, pretty good for a “gamer” playing a free-to-play game, right?
